Just say no to the summer slide! Aside from the benefits of playing and swimming all day, the most important thing kids can do this summer is reading. This summer, reading will become even more important for children who have had an interrupted school year due to COVID-19. Thankfully, a number of summer reading programs help keep learning going for the next few months … so kids can earn free goodies on the side. Get Started Today! Here are our tips for the best summer reading programs for kids.

Children can earn a FREE book after reading eight books and adding them to the downloadable reading diary. The Barnes and Noble Children’s Summer Reading Program is only available to students in grades 1 through 6. Only one book is available for each child who fills out a reading diary, and the selection must be made from the selected books in the store.

With Chuck E. Cheese’s Summer Children’s Reading Program, kids earn 10 FREE points every time they read for two weeks in a row. Fill out the form to receive the free tokens. Grocery shopping is required.

Read during the summer with Reading Is Fundamental, the nation’s largest nonprofit children’s literacy organization. From RIF reading lists and a collection of free e-books to interactive materials on Literacy Central and a brand new Literacy Central app, Reading Is Fundamental has tools for all levels to take reading to new heights this summer and beyond.

Half Price Books’ Children’s Summer Reading Program, also known as Summer Reading Camp, runs gift card promotions on social media for children who read for at least 300 minutes during June and July. The program website also offers printable coloring pages, online storytimes, and mystery book recommendations for ages from preschool through teenagers.

With over 60 million books sold, the best-selling Junie B. Jones series is a classroom favorite that has made kids laugh and read for over 20 years. Sign up for the Junie B. Jones Reading Club and receive a FREE starter kit with activity sheets and a membership card while supplies last.

7. Professional sports teams

Many professional sports teams sponsor summer reading programs, including the Portland Trailblazers and the Tampa Bay Rays. Check with your local team to see if they have a similar program.

Scholastic has a Summer Reading Challenge where kids go online to record the minutes they’ve read over the summer. This year kids can build an avatar, make new friends, earn virtual rewards, and unlock donations for kids with limited or no access to books. All you have to do is sign up and read on Scholastic Home Base for the summer!

The HE-Buddy Summer Reading Club, sponsored by HEB Grocery Stores, is giving away a free t-shirt to every child who reads 10 books this summer. This summer reading program is valid from now until October 1, 2020.

Sync has a teen-only summer reading program that is giving two free audiobooks every week this summer. Perfect for reading on the go and on the couch. Every week they offer a current YA book as well as a classic title that young people can download for free using the SORA / OverDrive app. This summer reading program runs until August 1, 2021.

Kids can get a free notepad and pen for Winn-Dixie with the Books A Million Summer Reading Program! This year’s summer reading adventure is led by children’s author and literacy advocate Kate DiCamillo. Start by reading four of the 75+ qualified books. Then they fill out a journal to show their progress and return it to a Books-A-Million store.

Accompany BOOK IT at their very first summer camp. Follow the children’s reading on their digital dashboard during the summer months. When they reach their monthly reading goal, kids will receive a free Staff Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut!

Read a book and earn a ticket to a free summer film! Children receive free entry to a selected children’s film if they present a book report at one of the participating Showcase Cinemas cinemas.
