House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi suggested Wednesday that people who believe President Joe Biden can himself cancel student debts are misinformed.

“The president can’t do it,” Pelosi said at a press conference. “That’s not even a discussion.”

Pelosi said any student debt relief should be done by Congress. Other people in your party have said otherwise.

Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, DN.Y .; Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass .; and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., have repeatedly urged Biden to exempt all borrowers from $ 50,000 in government student debt through executive action.

“All you need is the stroke of a pen,” said Schumer.

Biden has asked the US Department of Justice and the US Department of Education to review his legal authority to cancel student debt. Decisions by these authorities are not yet public.

“You will probably come to the same conclusion as spokesman Pelosi,” said university expert Mark Kantrowitz.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Even if Biden didn’t cancel the debt, Congress could still do so.

Given their wafer-thin majority, Democrats may struggle to pass a student loan bill, but they could include such a bill in the budget reconciliation process this fall. This path would not require Republican support.
