The tenants have rented a mean of $ 3,700 behind them. This map reveals a state outbreak
More than 11 million Americans continue to say they are behind on their rent.
How much renters owe varies widely from one state and county to the next, according to data provided to CNBC by Surgo Ventures, a nonprofit focused on health and data.
Across the country, the average tenant household owes $ 3,700 in arrears. The typical debt in Alabama is $ 2,700. In California, meanwhile, it’s closer to $ 5,300.
In some areas, tenants face even greater debts. In San Mateo County, California, the typical arrears tenant is $ 8,700 in the hole. Needy tenants in Bergen County, New Jersey owe an average of $ 6,400. A New York University study earlier this year found that thousands of New York City renters owe over $ 10,000 in debt.

It’s important to consider the diverse needs across the country, said Aaron Dibner-Dunlap, senior research scientist at Surgo Ventures.
“If you live in a high cost of living county, like many in California and New York, officials need to make sure there is enough public funding to cover the estimated debt,” he said.
The proportion of US tenants lagging behind – around 16% – has not changed significantly since March.
This is in large part because of how slow states and cities have been in distributing the $ 46 billion federal rent subsidy provided by Congress. By the end of June, only $ 3 billion had reached the people.
Tenants only have a little more time to try to access the state aid and before fear of eviction.
This week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new eviction moratorium after the previous one expired on July 31st. The protection is valid until October 3rd and for places where Covid rates remain high. This currently covers around 80% of the counties.
